Located in central Lantau Island, standing on Sunset Peak offers views of both the north and south. To the north is Hong Kong International Airport; to the south, the South China Sea and surrounding islands.
The famous buildings at Sunset Hill are the nearly 100-year-old stone cabins in Lantau Mountain Camp, and the distinctive large stone steps built by trail masters from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department about 50 years ago.
Every autumn and winter, silvergrass attracts visitors. In spring and summer, good weather makes Sunset Peak an ideal spot to see orographic clouds.
Begin your hike at Pak Kung Au. Trekking along the Lantau Trail section 2 toward Sunset Peak, be ready for a 2 km uphill climb, but you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of South Lantau.
With scenic views of bays and beaches open up to your right. Run your hand through the trailside, especially during the autumn season. Silvergrass, along the trail.
Feel the cool breeze and stop for a moment at Lantau Mountain Camp Buildings to enjoy the old mountain huts dotted across the hill. They make the perfect profile picture for your social media pages.
From the peak, you can go down the stairs through the forest to reach the Wong Lung Hang Country Trail, which descends near Tung Chung. This section is very steep with a seemingly endless number of stairs.
Proper hiking shoes are essential due to the rugged and rocky terrain.
