Tai O to Ngong Ping via Ngong Ping 360 Rescue Trail
Distance - 18.5km
Duration - 4.5 hours
Difficulty - 4/5 Advance
From Tai O, the trail follows the east shore of Tai O creek. To access it from the Tai O bus terminal, walk along Kat Hing Street, cross a small footbridge, and head towards Sun Ki Street.

At the coast, the path runs near Yeung Hau Temple and passes the Lantau North Obelisk sign to enter the Tung-O Ancient trail. The trail gradually climbs with dirt paths and stone steps, offering views of the HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, HK Airport, and Sham Wat Village.

The Ngong Ping 360 Rescue Trail offers a challenging hike, especially in hot weather, despite being paved. The hike spans about eight kilometres, with six kilometres dedicated to the rescue trail. It starts at the Tung O Ancient Trail and leads to Tower 3, approximately 280 metres above Tung Chung Bay. Much of the climb is unshaded, so it's essential to bring a hat and sunscreen.

As you ascend, you'll enjoy views of Tung Chung Bay, Yat Tung Estate, and the new town. From Tower 3, the trail continues to Tower 4, requiring you to cross a deep valley, though some shaded areas provide relief. On a clear day, you can see the airport and surrounding hills. After passing Tower 4, the Big Buddha comes into view, and the trail follows the Lantau Trail toward the statue.

As you near the end of the Ngong Ping 360 Rescue Trail, the views are definitely worth it. If you have the energy, you can scramble to the trigonometrical station for even better sights.

Follow the road to the colorful ramp entrance of Ngong Ping Village, where you can relax with shops, cafés, and restrooms. Don’t forget to visit Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha!
