Wilson Trail Section 5&6 | Sha Tin Pass to Shing Mun Reservoir

Wilson Trail Section 5&6 | Sha Tin Pass to Shing Mun Reservoir
We continued our adventure at the Shatin Pass Road junction at the end of Wilson Trail Section 4.
To reach this starting point, you can either take a taxi from Wong Tai Sin MTR station or walk around 30 minutes along the paved road. Note that the road ascends gradually and slightly steeply.
Distance - 14.75km
Duration - 4.5hours (Includes rest and photos)
Difficulty - 3/5 Intermediate
From the junction, walk towards the information board that is marked as Wilson Trail Section 5, and take a quick look at the map and information about the distance and duration of the hike.
We followed along the concrete road for a few minutes until we reached the fork in the road, turn right then followed the signage of Wilson Trail leading towards the dirt path trail.
The trail consists of dirt paths and occasional climbs and descends along stairs made of stone. There are plenty of rest areas along the way and the trail is shaded for most of the journey.
After around 2 km into the hike, we reached the catchwater area. This section is fairly easy, walking along a paved road however, there is not much view along the way but we enjoyed the calm and nature vibe along the way.
We decided to head up the Amah Rock as it passes in the same direction. It takes approximately 30 minutes from the Wilson Trail to head up Amah Rock.
Amah Rock (Chinese: 望夫石, Mong Fu Shek, lit. "husband-watching stone") is a naturally shaped rock located on a hilltop.
The rock is approximately 15 meters in height and is shaped much like a woman carrying a baby on her back. It stands above the entrance to the Lion Rock Tunnel, within Lion Rock Country Park.
The rock is a popular tourist destination; the whole Sha Tin District can be seen from there.
After taking photos and resting at Amah Rock, we retrace our steps back onto Wilson Trail Section 5 to continue along Hung Mui Kuk Nature Trail Catchwater until Tai Po Road which is the starting point of Wilson Trail Section 6.
Take care of your things during your hike along the catchwater as there are a lot of monkeys that may try to approach you, keep a safe distance.
Section 6 starts at the east part of Kowloon Reservoir, the trail heads up flights of steps before heading deeper into the forest, then eventually exiting towards Golden Hill Road at the Kam Shan Family Walk.
There is not much to see in this section as you are mainly walking along shaded areas along the forest.
Follow along the concrete road along Golden Hill before heading up once again toward Smuggler’s Ridge, there are many more steps to climb so take your time during the ascend.
At this point, the trail becomes a bit open, however, the views can only be seen at an angle where there are fewer trees in the surrounding.
After passing Summgler’s Ridge, the trail descends and becomes more relaxed as we are closer to the Shing Mun Reservoir.
Once we passed the Shing Mun Reservoir Main Dam, we arrived at the junction of Wilson Trail Section 6 & Section 7.
Overall this hike is moderate, although there are only a few areas with a view, we still enjoyed a quiet nature vibe along this route.
We recommend wearing appropriate hiking apparel and comfortable hiking shoes. Bring at least 2 liters of water and a few snacks. Use a pair of Trekking poles to assist with climbs and the long distance of the hike.
