Chung Hom Kok Rock Formations | Devil's Claw & Snoopy Rock

Chung Hom Kok is located west of Stanley and is primarily a residential neighborhood with the surrounding beach.  

The peninsula is an uninhabited hill Chung Hom Shan with plenty of rocks and rock formations. 

The two well-known rock formations are the Devil’s Claw and Snoopy Rock.  

Although the peninsula is a relatively small area to explore, the trails aren’t maintained or marked. 

Hiking here can experience bushwhacking, crouching under trees with occasional scrambling, and following ribbon markers to avoid getting lost.

 

We took the bus from Central and headed to Chung Hom Kok Road Beach bus stop (Take 6x KMB bus) 

Once you arrive at the bus stop at the roundabout, walk straight on Chung Hom Kok Road until you reach the vehicle passing place where you start the climb toward Devil’s Claw.  

The trail is obvious to spot as there are ribbon markers along a clear dirt path heading up. 

The climb is quite easy with minimal clambering, after a couple of minutes, you’ll arrive at an open area with a couple of rocks. From here, you will be able to see the Devil’s Claw right across the ridge.  

Continue to follow the ribbons through the trees until you arrive at the rock formations. 

Once you reach the Devil’s Claw, you can get closer or climb up the rock formations, but keep in mind that there are areas that are steep and quite dangerous to climb from. Make sure to keep safe while exploring the Devil’s Claw.  

After admiring the views and taking photos of the rock formations, we continue hiking to the top of the peninsula.  

The section heading toward the top of the hill is quite challenging. Here you’ll need to climb steeper slopes and pass through plenty of overgrown vegetation.  

We recommend wearing long pants, arm sleeves, and gloves as some rocks are very sharp.  

Once we reach the top of the Chung Hom Kok peninsula, you’ll notice a large formation of rocks. 

From up here, the views of Chung Hom Kok and Stanley are quite beautiful.  

After crossing a few bushes and thickets, you’ll arrive at another large formation of rocks that looks like Snoopy lying down and resting.  

Once again follow the trail in between the rocks and Snoopy Rock should be visible up ahead.  

The Snoopy Rock very much resembles the shape of a dog’s head that towers a few meters high. 

Some people climb up the Snoopy Rock’s head but it can be dangerous, make sure to be very careful as the climb is very steep and risky. 

 

To end the hike, continue down and follow the ribbon markers. 

Before reaching the Chung Hom Kok Battery, you will pass by the trigonometric station of Chung Hom Kok Shan.  

The trail begins to descend toward what looks like an observation post near Cheshire Home.  

We took a short break before we continued. The descent was a bit steep in some parts but manageable. 

Finally, we reached the long flights of steps heading back onto the road at Cheshire home.  

We followed the road back onto the roundabout at Chung Hom Kok Road where we ended our hike.  

Overall, the hike is quite adventurous and enjoyable. 

The rock formations and the views are amazing. We think that this spot is also great to enjoy watching the sunset.  

We recommend bringing at least 1-2 liters of hydration and a few snacks. 

Wear long pants and sleeves to avoid getting scratches from overgrown sections, wear good grip hiking shoes, and wear a pair of gloves for clambering.
